Ludhiana: Continuing its crackdown against tax evasion, the state GST (SGST) department set up multiple checkpoints near Mandi Gobindgarh and Ludhiana GT Road on Wednesday. Till the filing of the report, 51 trucks loaded with scrap and steel goods were impounded by the department’s teams in Mandi Gobindgarh, as the drivers did not have proper invoices, e-way bills or other required documents.
It is expected that penalties worth lakhs will be imposed on the owners of the goods. The process of issuing notices to them is under way.
Additional commissioner (taxation), Punjab, Jiwanjot Kaur said, “In a special checking drive conducted in Mandi Gobindgarh on Wednesday, we have impounded 51 trucks so far. These goods-laden trucks were found evading huge amount of tax and as of now, the process of issuing notices, imposing penalties is under way. A week before as well, we had impounded 101 trucks in Mandi Gobindgarh for evading tax, by adopting similar modus operandi.”
Surprise checkings started in Mandi Gobindgarh and Ludhiana last week following the orders of Punjab excise and taxation minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
